The UTEP men's golf team played well on the first day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Monday in Las Cruces, putting together rounds of 280 and 287 for a 36-hole total of 567.
That leaves the Miners tied for third place with Texas State (286-281-567) and within striking distance of tournament leader Wichita State (283-282-565). UNLV is in second place at the 12-team event (296-293-589).
UTEP sent an eight-man contingent to the NM State Golf Course. Martin Simonsen is tied for ninth place with a one-under-par 141 (71-70). Ross Rotwein is tied for 13th place (68-74-142), Devin Miertschin is tied for 23rd place (76-68-144), Ian Patterson is tied for 38th place (72-75-147) and Roberto Ruiz is tied for 41st place (69-79-148). Competing as individuals were Jere Pelletier (tied for sixth, 70-70-140), Jerry Castrellon (tied for 38th, 74-73-147) and Jose Romero (76-76-152).
The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
