The Diabetic Dog game, or: Your Nobel committee at work? | Health ...

In these difficult times, with so many important issues waiting to be addressed, it is good to know that the people behind the Nobel Prize are taking care of the things that matter.

By which I mean ? when you go to their website, you can play a game about a diabetic dog.

No, seriously.

?90 years ago researchers led by Frederick Banting announced the discovery of the hormone insulin,? the promo says. ?In this game you can take care of a diabetic dog and learn how to treat diabetes!?

I couldn?t resist an opportunity like that. So I clicked.

The opening screen of the ?Diabetic Dog Game? has graphics and music that lead me to suspect that the Commodore 64 computer is still alive and well and being used by developers in Sweden.

Diabetic Dog Game

But I went ahead and decided to play, because who can say no to a weeping, diabetic dog ? especially one whose head appears to have been stretched in a terrible accident, possibly while his owner was attempting to assemble Ikea?s new SVORKSBLOT doghouse for insulin-dependent dogs?

I was asked to name my dog. My first choice, ?Sugar,? was already taken. (I guess that was not a very original thought. Sorry.) The Nobel people suggested ?Lady 9876.? Which sounded ? I don?t know, more like a cat name to me. So I went with ?Diabetic Rover.? Which was approved, which led me to the next exciting phase of the game: ?With your dog Diabetic Rover comes a manual for dog owners. It describes how to take care of your diabetic dog.?

OK, so it?s not World of Warcraft yet, but then, World of Warcraft doesn?t allow you to simulate giving insulin shots to a dog.

Diabetic Dog instructions

And I would need those insulin shots. Because after I took Rover on a run around the screen, chasing some kind of bird (echoes of another Swedish icon, the Swedish Chef?), my pooch?s blood sugar started to go CRAZY, and I had to ? yes, grab the hypo. Here?s what happens if you are too slow at this.

Later, I watched him drink from a hose, urinate on a bush ? really ? and, while I tried to capture an image of him action, apparently die. I know this because a screen came up saying that someone had rushed him to emergency care, and that I had not only lost the privilege of caring for the dog, he had been forever erased from the database. I had to play the game again just to make sure I read it correctly.

This lack of coddling in a game, presumably aimed at children, might seem a bit harsh to many people. Luckily, I was raised Lutheran and had many friends of Scandinavian background ? so I was not exactly surprised. (I suspect that all Northern Europeans who coddled their children were removed from the gene pool long ago when they were eaten by ice wolves.)

Now, let me just say: I think diabetes is serious. I have many friends and family members who deal with it. It takes courage and tenacity, and I am grateful that the Nobel Prize rewards the work of people such as Frederick Grant Banting and John James Rickard Macleod, who won the award in 1923 for the discovery of insulin, which has saved countless lives.

But when I want to teach my kids that ? I?m thinking maybe I will hand them a book instead.

Drinking Made Easy ? Q & A with Tequila Partida Mixologist/Brand ...

Jacques Bezuidenhout started his spirits journey twenty years ago in South Africa. He worked at various bars and restaurants and realized then what his livelihood would be. It?wasn?t?until he moved to London, where?bartending?is considered a profession instead of just a job, that his dream finally came true though.

He moved to the states in 1998, receiving his first American bartending gig at the Irish Bank Bar and Restaurant in San Francisco. While he worked at Irish Bank, Bezuidenhout hand selected the bar?s spirits and created the largest Scotch Whiskey Selection in the Bay area.

Since then, he has served as an opening consultant for countless bars and restaurants and was brand ambassador for Plymouth Gin. On top of all of this, Bezuidenhout has completed work at Tres Agaves, one of the best bar programs in the US. He also created the San Francisco chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild, judges many spirits and cocktail competitions, was voted the best bartender in San?Francisco?by Anthony Dias Blue, his cocktails have been written about in The San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, 7?7 Magazine, Wine Enthusiast, Sante?and?Cheers, and have been shown on?Fine Living Network, Food Network?and MarthaStewart.com.

I had a chance to ask Bezuidenhout about his job, his love for spirits and his advice for young bartenders.

Tell me a little bit about your role at Partida.

I am the National Bartender Ambassador for Partida which means I have the Chief Tequila drinking position for Partida. Along the way I also educate on Partida and?the?Tequila category. With?education?we feel the whole Tequila category will grow.

How does one become a ?bartender ambassador??

Great question and I am not sure there is a specific answer. You have to be out many nights and some very late but still be up early to take care of regular business. Be sociable and friendly amongst small and large groups and have the knowledge to really talk?passionately?about your Brand as well as the brand category. Get used to a lot of travel and living out of a suit case.

You?ve studied distilleries all around the world. Where is it being done the best right now?

I think right now the best Distillers are the Scots making Whiskies. The quality of Single Malts and Blends across?the?category when it comes to Distillation and aging of spirits is incredible.

Why did you choose to work with tequila out of all of the other spirits you?ve studied?

I think Tequila is the most fun. It can be consumed Neat or in many different cocktails. Any class or style of people are drinking Tequila so it is not?cornered?into a specific style like overly fancy or anything like that. You can drink it at any?occasion?and?usually?it leads to some very fun and crazy stories.

What is your bartending style and do you have a specialty drink?

I think I am a very friendly sociable bartender and I love the proper?Technique?when it comes to either stirring or shaking. I want to make the guest feel comfortable and make them a great drink quickly. It?s always important to take great care of the guest and ensure they have a brilliant time. My favorite drink that I made so far has been the La Perla. with Partida reposado, Manzanilla Sherry and Pear Liqueur.

Do you have any advice for young bartenders?

Strive to become the best at your craft. You don?t always need to create the Next New Cocktail. Pay attention to the classics. They are still around for that very reason?because?they?are great. Remember that we can all make great drinks and have extensive knowledge but at the end of the day if we don?t make sure the guest has had a great time then they won?t return.

Montana senator holds on despite Obama drag

(AP) ? Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is hanging on in a brutal re-election battle in Montana despite a drag from President Barack Obama, who is poised to lose big in this sparsely populated, libertarian-minded state.

His opponent, Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg, has been unable to pull ahead of the first-term senator after trying to tie him to Obama and the president's signature health care law. Victory probably lies in the dwindling ranks of undecided voters.

"In Montana, I know where Rep. Rehberg stands at, and I know where Sen. Tester stands at," said Great Falls retiree Dale Specht, a member of the roughly 6 percent of voters in the state who haven't settled on a candidate. "I am just trying to figure out who is going to do the best job for our state of Montana."

Both candidates have preached their independent credentials as outside spending bombards TV viewers across Montana's vast expanse with unprecedented waves of attack ads ? nearly $12 million worth so far.

National Democratic Party groups, unions and Democratic-aligned super PACs, such as the Majority PAC, have spent slightly more than $7.3 million mainly on attack ads against Rehberg, the state's lone House member since 2001. The Karl Rove-founded Crossroads groups, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other conservative campaign funding operations have spent $4.3 million on ads critical of Tester.

The race remains one of the half-dozen or so pure toss-ups that will determine whether Democrats continue to control the Senate or Republicans take it over.

Tester may well be helped by Montana's relatively low 6.3 percent unemployment rate. Booming oil fields in the eastern part of the state have blunted the recession's effect and taken some of the sting out of the GOP's national effort to blame family-level fiscal hardships on Obama and Democrats like Tester.

Montana has a rich history of ticket-splitting. In both 2004 and 2008, Montanans picked the Republican presidential candidate while electing a Democratic governor. The state legislature is now dominated by Republicans, but control has shifted back and forth over the past decade.

In some ways the race is reminiscent of 1996, when Rehberg nearly ousted Democratic Sen. Max Baucus from office over Baucus's fleeting support of gun control during Bill Clinton's presidency.

"The good news for Tester is that he has does have a real independent streak, particularly on a series of issues that are near and dear to the hearts of many Montanans," said University of Montana political scientist Robert Saldin. "But in this particular year, with this particular president at the top of the ticket, it's far from clear whether that will be enough."

Tester, 56, looks more like the grain farmer he is than a typical U.S. senator, and retains much of the everyman appeal that propelled him to a razor-close upset win in 2006 over three-term Republican incumbent Conrad Burns.

Tester says openly that if he loses he will be content to return to his relatively modest Big Sandy homestead to plow fields and fix equipment. He vowed in a recent interview with The Associated Press that he would never return to Washington as a lobbyist, as many ex-officeholders have.

However, Tester doesn't plan on losing. He is campaigning furiously with a more complex strategy. He recently held a weekend concert with Pearl Jam ? bassist Jeff Ament is a friend from Big Sandy ? at the University of Montana to rally his base.

"It doesn't matter what the polls say, it's going to be close," Tester said.

What he almost never mentions is Obama or his vote for the president's health care overhaul ? though when asked, the senator says he wouldn't take it back.

Instead, Tester touts his independence on issues such as wolves, big business bailouts, energy development important in the booming oil fields in eastern Montana, and proposed administration agricultural rules considered laughable by many family farmers. He says his top issue after re-election would be to resuscitate a bipartisan balanced budget solution that has languished in Congress.

Tester also has been fighting Rehberg's attacks with plenty of his own, portraying the six-term congressman as a land developer ? rather than a rancher ? and a Washington insider with few accomplishments.

Tester blames Rehberg for failing to persuade the GOP-controlled House to pass a farm bill. He also accuses the Republican of taking lavish trips overseas on the taxpayers' tab and points to Rehberg being caught on tape saying he relies on lobbyists for his information.

As many voters hold negative views about Rehberg as Tester.

It didn't help Rehberg's case that late last year he had to drop a lawsuit he filed against his hometown's firefighters as political damage from it mounted. Three years ago, Rehberg, 57, also made headlines after he and staffers were seriously injured when a boat being operated by a GOP state senator crashed after a night of drinking.

Democrats also hope the Libertarian candidate on the ticket steals some anti-government conservative voters from Rehberg's side.

Rehberg, meanwhile, is sticking to his strategy of denouncing Obama administration policies and attacking Tester for backing many of them. Rehberg argues that Tester is not the independent-minded farmer the state thought it was going to get.

"It is the cumulative effect of all the taxes and regulations that are stifling businesses," Rehberg told campaign supporters at one Helena campaign stop, reinforcing his primary theme. "Government is not going to create the jobs. Montanans do."

Video Blog: Top ten tips for renting a home - Real Estate - Leasing

Renting a home can be an underappreciated and difficult task at times. Almost everyone ends up doing so at some point in their lives, yet when it comes to help and advice tenants can often feel like a forgotten tribe.

Initiatives are launched left, right and centre to help first-time buyers, families climbing the property ladder and pensioners struggling to keep their homes, but rarely do renters get a look in.

But there are ways to make sure your next letting experience is more hospitable than horrible. Here are our top ten tips for renting a home.

1. Do your research

Spend plenty of time investigating the area. The advantage of renting is that you can move when your tenancy is up, but don't think too short-term - make sure this is the area you want to live in. If you have children make sure you look into the local schools and not just the nearest one - you may not be guaranteed a place. The best way to get a feel for an area is to visit and have a wander around on foot.

2. Use the whole rental market

Don't just walk into the High Street estate agents! Large firms can have a wide range of property but check out property management agencies and private landlords too and make sure you are not paying over the odds.

A good place to search for independent agents online is listing websites. In London gumtree.com or craigslist.co.uk can also be a useful place to look.

3. Take your time viewing properties

Looking around rental properties can be frustrating at times but if you find somewhere you like don't just give it a ten minute once over. Check everything carefully. Does it have central heating, a washing machine, dishwasher, decent fridge and freezer? What are the showers like? Are the windows in good condition? These can all be forgotten in the heat of the moment. Make a checklist to take with you when viewing properties you really like.

4. Ask the agent about their fees

Before you make an offer, quiz the agent about fees for references and credit checks. Sadly ramping up fees is a sharp practice that started in the cut-throat lettings market in certain areas of London, spread outwards to encompass most of the capital and has now gained a foothold in other major cities in the UK.

Avoiding firms that charge high fees is the only way to try and put a stop to this. If they cook up expenses at the start, it's also likely they will try and cash in on your deposit when you move out.

5. Choose flatmates carefully

If you are looking at renting with others, choose who you live with carefully. A recent poll by Gumtree.com showed chef Jamie Oliver is the person people would most like to live with, while troubled popstar Pete Doherty was the least popular. It's unlikely most people will end up with a celebrity housemate, good or bad, but little things can make the difference between harmony and torment. Money is the most common cause of dispute. Make sure you work out your budget and how bills will be paid.

6. Haggle over price

Whether you are dealing with a letting agent or a landlord, it's important to remember you hold the upper hand. They want to rent out the property and if it is empty when you view they will be eager to get someone in as soon as possible. It might be worth making an offer below the rent being asked for, typically it is possible to get some kind of discount, or maybe more.

7. Make sure you set up direct debits or payments properly

Being a tenant who doesn't pay on time is the best way to ensure your landlord or agent won't go out of their way to help you. Getting all the finances sorted properly and having the deposit, first month's rent and subsequent rent arrive on time will mean that you are immediately onside with the people you need to call if the plumbing goes or you want a new oven.

8. Do a full inventory

Don't be tempted to skip through the inventory and move in as soon as you can. If you don't go through everything with a fine-toothed comb, then you are leaving yourself open to cash being taken from your deposit. It's not just furniture and contents that need checking, note if carpets and curtains have been steam-cleaned and check the soft furnishings' condition. In the first few days of moving in, take a note of all the problems you spot and let the agent or landlord know, preferably in a letter or email then you have a copy should things go wrong.

9. Tell your agent or landlord if there are problems

Landlords are not psychic. You may know that the washing machine has stopped working and grumble about it, but unless someone tells them they don't know work needs doing. Don't be shy in reporting any difficulties, having fixed at no cost to you is one of the privileges of being a tenant.

10. Don't let your deposit go easily.

It shouldn't happen but it does. Some landlords and agents, whether renting out shared digs or a family home, try and cash in on departing tenant's deposits. By law they must prove the exact cost of every deduction. Do not be fobbed off and do not be fooled by scare tactics. New laws will soon be in place later this year over deposits to try and clear up what can be a murky area.

Tenants need to be vigilant and if an agent refuses to return a deposit without reason report them to the Association of Residential Letting Agents or National Association of Estate Agents, if they are a member, and threaten the small claims court if they are not members.
