Rodney King found dead in swimming pool

Rodney King, the man whose beating sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots, was found dead in his swimming pool early Sunday morning at the age of 47. Though King was described as an avid swimmer, police are investigating his death as a drowning. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Updated at 3:34 p.m.?ET: Rodney King, the black motorist whose videotaped beating by Los Angeles police officers in 1991 sparked some of the deadliest race riots in U.S. history, was found dead on Sunday, police said. He was 47.

Police in Rialto, Calif., found King's body?in a swimming pool after?getting a 911 call from his fiancee,?Rialto Police Capt. Randy DeAnda told?NBC News.?Officers pulled King from the pool and began doing CPR but he was unresponsive.


King was transported to Arrowhead Hospital in Colton, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m. PDT, DeAnda said.

The San Bernadino County coroner will perform an autopsy.

"Right now we have no reason to believe there was foul play because of the circumstances," Rialto Police Sgt. Richard Royce told msnbc.com. "The evidence is that it was a simple drowning."

Homicide detectives continued to investigate mid-Sunday morning, Royce said, although he called the investigation "a standard death investigation."

A file photo from the Los Angeles Times shows that the pool is oval-shaped, and that King had erected tarps around it to prevent neighbors from peering in. Two dates are inscribed along the pool wall: 3/3/91, the day King was beaten, and 4/29/92, the day a jury acquitted three of the four officers who beat him.

King was beaten by Los Angeles Police Department officers?on a dark street on March 3, 1991, after he was stopped for speeding. Four officers hit him more than 50 times, kicked him and shot him with stun guns. A bystander videotaped much of the incident from a distance.

A year later, a California jury acquitted three of the four officers, three of whom were white and one Hispanic. The jury deadlocked on one of the charges for Officer Laurence Powell.

The riots that?erupted on?April 29, 1992, were among the most lethal in U.S. history. By the time order was restored, more than 50 people had died, nearly 3,000 were injured and thousands of businesses were damaged or destroyed.

In one of the most searing images from the riots,?a?33-year-old white construction worker named Reginald Denny was pulled from his vehicle and beaten unconscious by four men at a Los Angeles intersection. Twenty years later, he has still not recovered from his injuries.

The violent reaction prompted King's famous plea on television:?"Can we all get along?"

Nearly a year later, a federal jury convicted two of the police officers of a federal charge of violating King?s civil rights and sentenced them to 30 months in prison. Two other officers were acquitted. King eventually received a $3.8 million settlement from the city, and the case led to sweeping changes in LAPD.

The police chief, Daryl Gates, came under intense criticism from city officials who said officers were slow to respond to the riots. He was forced to retire. Gates died of cancer in 2010.

20 years later: Have race relations improved?

In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as "Celebrity Rehab."

In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press, King said he was a happy man.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he said. "This part of my life is the easy part now."

King had recently been promoting his just-published memoir, "The Riot Within: My Journey From Rebellion to Redemption." The book came out around the 20th anniversary of the L.A. riots.

King, who has three children, was engaged to marry Cynthia Kelley, a juror in the civil suit he brought against the city of Los Angeles, according to the biography that accompanied his book.

The Los Angeles Times published a quote that King gave the newspaper earlier this year: "I would change a few things, but not that much. Yes, I would go through that night, yes I would. I said once that I wouldn't, but that's not true. It changed things. It made the world a better place.''

Central banks prepare for turmoil after Greek vote

FRANKFURT/LONDON (Reuters) - Central banks from Tokyo to London checked their ammunition on Friday in preparation for any turmoil from Greece's election, with the European Central Bank hinting at an interest rate cut and Britain set to open its coffers.

Tensions were high about how to manage the euro zone's debt crisis - epitomized by Greece's bankruptcy and need for international aid - and a rare fight broke out between Germany and France, normally the glue that keeps the bloc together.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized France's economic performance, effectively taking a swipe at Socialist President Francois Hollande who has called for more emphasis on economic growth and less on budget austerity.

The feeling of crisis was real. "We must do everything possible to prevent the euro zone from falling apart," Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on television.

ECB President Mario Draghi, one of many policymakers gearing up for trouble after Sunday's vote in Greece, said his bank was ready to step in and fund any viable euro zone bank that gets in trouble.

He painted a picture of a deteriorating euro zone economy with no inflation danger - conditions for monetary easing.

"There are serious downside risks here," Draghi told the annual ECB Watchers conference in Frankfurt, two days before the vote that could set Athens on a path out of the euro zone and stoke turmoil in financial markets.

"This risk has to do mostly with the heightened uncertainty."

Japan's top financial diplomat Takehiko Nakao warned that authorities in Tokyo would respond to unwelcome currency moves as appropriate, a clear threat of intervention if investors seeking safety push the yen too high.

It was an echo of strong pledges from the Swiss National Bank on Thursday that it would do what it takes to protect the franc from soaring.

The Bank of England followed up on Thursday's joint announcement with the government of a 100 billion pound ($155 billion) offer of loans to banks by saying it will start next week with a charge of just 0.75 percent.

In the United States, Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs Lael Brainard offered assurance that Washington has a "tool kit" and stood ready to preserve market confidence.

"Everyone is well prepared, too, in the wake of the elections on Greece, to work together to make sure there is a path forward that is sustainable for Greece and bolsters confidence more broadly," she said.

GETTING READY

Officials from the G20 nations, whose leaders are meeting in Mexico next week, say numerous central banks are preparing to take steps to stabilize financial markets - if needed - by providing liquidity and prevent any credit squeeze.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy convened a conference call on Friday afternoon with the leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Britain, officially to discuss preparations for the G20 summit, expected to be dominated by the euro zone debt crisis.

Depending on the depth of any turmoil, an emergency meeting of ministers from the Group of Seven developed nations could be held on Monday or Tuesday during the summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, sources said.

The focal point for all is Sunday's repeat general election in Greece, a knife-edge race that could be won by parties vowing to tear up the harsh economic terms that the European Union and International Monetary Fund imposed as conditions of a bailout for the near-bankrupt state.

Such an outcome could drive Greece into default and possibly out of the euro zone, a prospect that could undermine faith in the currency bloc and add to pressure on the finances of bigger economies such as Italy and Spain.

Madrid's borrowing costs rose above 7 percent on Thursday, a level that is widely considered unsustainable. They fell slightly on Friday and European shares gained on expectations of global central bank response. The euro was lower, however.

"At best, we are going to have a situation that is extremely serious on Monday," Swedish Finance Minister Anders Borg told journalists. "In all likelihood, whatever the outcome, we are going to have a government which is going to find it hard to live up to the agreements they (the Greeks) have signed up to."

WORSENING OUTLOOK

In a sign of growing strain between Europe's central powers, Merkel hit out at France in response to Hollande's proposals for joint euro zone bonds and a joint bank deposit guarantee scheme.

"Europe must discuss the growing differences in economic strength between France and Germany," Merkel said.

Responding to Hollande's call for more euro zone solidarity, she said Germany had wanted to give the European Court of Justice the power to reject national budgets that breach EU rules but others had objected. She meant France.

Draghi said the ECB was ready to provide money to solvent banks if they needed it, a clear plan to avoid the kind of credit crunch that occurred during the Lehman Brother crisis in 2008.

"The ECB has the crucial role of providing liquidity to sound bank counterparties in return for adequate collateral. This is what we have done throughout the crisis, faithful to our mandate of maintaining price stability over the medium term - and this is what we will continue to do," he said.

Draghi also said that no euro zone country faces an inflation risk, which is the bank's main concern. That gelled with comments from ECB policymakers a day earlier that the central bank might be open to cutting interest rates.

Britain did not wait for the Greek vote to announce action. Bank of England Governor Mervyn King said on Thursday the country would launch a scheme to provide cheap long-term funding to banks to encourage them to lend to businesses and consumers.

The central bank would also activate an emergency liquidity supply, King said.

King said the euro zone's problems were causing a crisis of confidence in Britain that was leading to a self-reinforcing weaker picture of growth.

"The black cloud has dampened animal spirits so that businesses and households are battening down the hatches to prepare for the storms ahead," he said.

On Friday, the bank said it will hold a first emergency liquidity operation for banks next week with at least 5 billion pounds on offer. Loans would be at a minimum of the Bank Rate, 0.5 percent, plus an additional 25 basis points.

STAND-OFF IN ATHENS

In Athens, the election was seen as too close to call. Alexis Tsipras, leader of the main anti-bailout leftist party SYRIZA, said on Thursday the deal with Greece's international lenders, which has helped push the economy into a depression, would not last beyond the weekend.

"The memorandum of bankruptcy will belong to the past on Monday," Tsipras, who has rapidly emerged from fringe politics to challenge the mainstream for power, told his last campaign rally in Athens.

European leaders, however, have warned that Greece will get no help if it reneges. Officials have also hinted that Athens might be granted more time to achieve its fiscal targets if a new government sticks to the core reforms in the program.

French President Francois Hollande warned Greek voters about seeking what Tsipras has promised - a future in the euro while ditching the 130-billion-euro ($160 billion) bailout deal sealed earlier this year and its demands for punishing austerity policies.

Hollande said on Greek TV that he wanted the country to stay in the euro, rather than reviving its drachma currency.

"But I have to warn them, because I am a friend of Greece, that if the impression is given that Greece wants to distance itself from its commitments and abandon all prospect of recovery, there will be countries in the euro zone which will prefer to finish with the presence of Greece in the euro zone."

SYRIZA is running neck-and-neck with the mainstream conservatives for Sunday's parliamentary vote, a re-run of an election last month that produced a stalemate in which neither the pro- nor anti-bailout camps was able to form a coalition.

    Incoming Big 12 commish against paying athletes

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Bob Bowlsby will have his hands full the next couple of months.

    The incoming Big 12 commissioner is finishing up his tenure as athletic director at Stanford, hopping on a plane after wrapping up a series of meetings with his new league in Kansas City on Friday so that he could attend the Pac-12?s annual spring meetings.

    He will officially take over at the Big 12 on June 15, and get in about a month of work before flying to London, where he will have responsibilities as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

    "Let it suffice to say that a trip to London is not going to be most convenient," he said. Especially with so many pressing issues facing the conference.

    There are questions about the future of college football?s playoff structure, and whether the bowl system will be dismantled. Television negotiations will be front and center, and Bowlsby has yet to meet much of the Big 12 staff or visit the conference?s 10 current schools.

    "I expect I?ll get to every campus within 30 to 60 days," he said.

    Sounds like an ambitious schedule.

    There was little news out of the final day of the Big 12 meetings, though Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis announced that approximately $19 million will be distributed to each member for the 2011-12 year from media rights deals, the aggregate representing an all-time high.

    That figure includes the withdrawal fees for Texas A&M and Missouri, which join the Southeastern Conference on July 1. Part of the exit fee money was also used to finance a $10 million loan to West Virginia, which is leaving the Big East to join TCU as new members of the Big 12.

    Otherwise, Bowlsby mostly reiterated the stance of presidents and athletic directors. He said that the Big 12 supports a four-team playoff consisting of the highest-ranked teams to determine college football?s national champion, rather than a plus-one model that has new legs after the Big 12 and SEC announced the formation of the so-called Champions Bowl.

    There is also a four-team model in which conference champions play an integral part, which has been supported by Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott and others.

    "I suppose that I have been back and forth a bit, relative to conference champions versus highest-ranked four," Bowlsby said. "For the Big 12, the highest-ranked four is a good thing. It?s a good example of where I think there needs to be compromise moving forward."

    Another area where compromise will be needed is the selection criteria.

    While the current BCS standings, which combine computer ratings with human polls, are almost universally panned, there are some leagues such as the Big 12 that favor a selection committee to determine the four best teams. Others favor a combination of different formulas.

    "I don?t think the idea of a four-team playoff is hard to comprehend. The details come into site selection, team selection and how you develop the ranking system," acting Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas said. "There has to be transparency so the public feels they?re somehow involved, and that helps to create interest.

    "The one thing we want to underscore again is the importance of the regular season. That?s been foremost in our minds," he added. "There has not been a eureka idea that we?ve found the perfect ranking system. That is a work in progress, and there are a number of ideas."

    Bowlsby also agreed with Big 12 presidents and ADs who voiced their support this week for a 10-team league in which football and basketball teams play a true round-robin schedule, though he acknowledged that there is always the chance for future expansion.

    "When it?s right, we?ll know it?s right," Bowlsby said, "and in the meantime, there?s not a thing wrong with the 10 we have."

    The other significant issue Bowlsby addressed was stipends. He was steadfastly against proposals that have been floated for paying up to $4,000 per year to student-athletes, pointing out that there are other avenues in which aspiring athletes can play for pay.

    "We should never do anything to establish an employee-employer relationship," Bowlsby said. "There are places you can go and play for money, but colleges and universities are not among them. This is an educational undertaking."

    Hargis, the chairman of the league?s board of directors, was even more forceful in his opposition to stipends, even for athletes in revenue-producing sports such as football.

    "I don?t think it?s a good idea," Hargis said. "These student-athletes are provided scholarships in many cases, and they?re eligible for other assistance. You get into all this kind of stipend stuff and it affects the amateurism, I think it affects recruiting. I just think it?s introducing an idea that?s not necessary."
