Nokia cops to powering Amazon's mapping service

Nokia cops to powering Amazon's mapping service

Well, Amazon is being pretty tight lipped about the details of its mapping service, but Nokia isn't afraid to spill the beans. A spokesperson for the Finish company, Sebastian Kurme, told The Next Web that Amazon is indeed licensing the Nokia Location Platform for its latest Google-shunning product. We reached out as well and were fed the exact same official statement, confirming that Nokia is becoming an even bigger player in the mapping sphere. The platform is already the basis for Yahoo! Maps and a large portion of Bing's offerings as well. Not to mention Nokia Drive, the company's navigation software, is one of the crown jewels of the Windows Phone world. Check out the full statement from Nokia below.

Amazon is licensing the Nokia Location Platform (NLP) for maps and geocoding.

The Nokia Location Platform is the most advanced mobile location platform with a unique global footprint. It provides maps for almost 200 countries (with more than 100 of them navigable) and provides the best, automotive-grade map quality based on industry-leading technology and more than 20 years expertise in mapping.

Amongst others, it is already powering Yahoo Maps, and increasingly also powering Bing Maps as well.

Location is playing a central role in our strategy, and because of its global footprint, quality and completeness of performance (geocoding, routing, traffic) the Nokia Location Platform offers great opportunities for 3rd parties to build upon.

Amazon´s decision to choose the Nokia Location Platform is further proof point that our competence in this space is a key differentiator also for other leading players in the industry to offer great location consumer experiences.

Australia's mining sector progresses safety but without effective ...

In 2010 the New South Wales Mines Safety Advisory Council (MSAC) released its important Digging Deeper report, proving this industry sector is at the forefront of safety management innovation in Australia. ?This?month? MSAC provided an insight into ?world-leading? safety with its report ?Actions for World-leading Work Health and?Safety?to 2017?.

The report discusses five strategic areas for attention but of more interest is the?elements?that MSAC?believes?represents ?world-leading WHS?:

The elements in the diagram include, in no particular order:

  • Zero Harm
  • Authentic WHS Commitment
  • Competence
  • Genuine Consultation
  • Production with Safety
  • Fair & Just Implementation
  • Effective, Fair Enforcement
  • Clear Accountabilities
  • Stakeholders share?problems?and collaborate
  • Systems & Practice connect.

Most of these should not be new to WHS professionals but there are several words that immediately generate attention ? the adjective and qualifications to rudimentary safety elements or regulatory requirements.

?Authentic?WHS Commitment? for instance illustrates that there is commitment and then there is commitment. ?Commitment on?workplace?health and safety should never need the additional descriptor of ?authentic??and?clearly implies that past commitment has been half-hearted or lip-service. ?This implication is not directed at the mining industry but says that corporate commitments to WHS in the past have been less than solid. ?Companies who express commitment need to note that the quality of that commitment, the support and follow-through on promised actions or policies, is being assessed and, in some circumstances, has been wanting.

?Genuine Consultation?shows that the consultative requirements of OHS and labour laws have been circumvented. ?Those WHS regulators who have pushed for increased and improved WHS consultation need to acknowledge that trying to establish equitable dialogue on safety through various layers of the?organisational?structure has not been achieved.

This is a substantial observation in relation to the reliance on new WHS laws in Australia. ?These laws have been largely based on the?Victorian?OHS statutes that require consultation but if, over the last few years, consultation has been?ineffective, will the?misinterpretation?or misapplication of consultation be repeated in the new laws?

Of course the phrase may relate specifically to the previous NSW OHS laws as the?report?is from New?South?Wales but even there in 2010?consultation was a strong expectation of WorkCover.

?Production with Safety? indicates that production and safety are still seen as competing corporate priorities. ?This perception is a nonsense but at nonsense that is seen as a common sense by many. ?It is a shortsighted (mis)understanding of business costs, business risks and?legislative?WHS?obligations.? ?Workplace incidents often cause businesses, particularly small businesses to fail, because the cost of incidents is so high. ?This is part of the misunderstanding of the safety role in business as there is plenty of evidence that good?management?of safety cuts costs and risk.

The ?report also emphasises the need for fairness and justice in both the?implementation and?the enforcement of safety. ?The increasing emphasis on justice or a ?just culture? is intriguing?and?implementing?such a concept could have major positive repercussions for business but, at the moment, the concept remains too institutionally threatening to be little more than an academic concept.

The concepts in the wheel of the diagram are not new and are not ?world-leading?. ?They are simply the core elements of operating any business safely but this wheel from MSAC progresses?workplace?health and safety in Australia by acknowledging previous safety management concepts that have failed to live up to expectations or are still contested by the business culture. ?The report?s conclusion illustrates the weaknesses in the wheel:

?Stakeholders will need to recognise the need for work health and safety improvement in priority areas and commit to active participation in improvement strategies?.

Some would argue that sustainable safety changes usually result from workplace fatalities and serious injuries. ?The lack of fatalities can lull businesses, and workers, into a false sense of managerial security. ?The MSAC report is important but is?likely?to be ineffective in itself. ?Industries outside of mining will pay the report little attention. ?Organisations will struggle to ?recognise the need??without?the reality of failure.

The report is also thin on identifying why anyone should ?commit to active participation in improvement strategies?. ?It says that MSAC will?monitor?and report progress in the five strategic areas to the Minister and others but what if the industry stakeholders fail to achieve the strategy or to live up to the ?vision??

This report has great potential to generate?positive?change but it could also be an echo of the self-regulatory strategies that industry associations pedalled for several decades. ?These strategies are rarely supported by sanctions or penalties and as such have been seen as marketing exercises in the ?past. ?The MSAC report could be different but even the most effective ?positive duty? remains built with the reality of penalties. ?This is true for this strategy as?much?as it is for Australia?s National OHS Strategy. Advocacy without penalty is simply marketing.

Long menopause allows killer whales to care for adult sons

ScienceDaily (Sep. 13, 2012) ? Scientists have found the answer to why female killer whales have the longest menopause of any non-human species -- to care for their adult sons. Led by the Universities of Exeter and York and published in the journal Science (Sept. 14, 2012) the research shows that, for a male over 30, the death of his mother means an almost 14-fold-increase in the likelihood of his death within the following year.

The reason for the menopause remains one of nature's great mysteries and very few species have a prolonged period of their lifespan when they no longer reproduce, as in humans. However, female killer whales stop reproducing in their 30s-40s, but can survive into their 90s. While different theories have been put forward for the evolution of menopause in humans, including the well-established 'grandmother' hypothesis, there has been no definitive answer to why females of a small number of other species, including killer whales, also stop reproducing part-way through their lives.

The research team, from the Universities of Exeter and York (UK), the Center for Whale Research (USA) and Pacific Biological Station (Canada) analysed records spanning 36 years, of the members of two populations of killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the North Pacific ocean, off the coast of the USA and Canada.

They found that the presence of a female who was no longer reproducing significantly increased her older offspring's survival. In the case of males over the age of 30, a mother's death meant a 14-fold increase in the likelihood of their death within a year. Females also stay within their mother's group but for daughters of the same age, the difference is just under three-fold. For females under the age of 30, the death of their mothers had no effect on their survival rates.

Killer whales live in unusual social groups, with sons and daughters staying with their mothers in a single group throughout their lives. With this close association, older mothers have the opportunity to increase the transmission of their genes by helping their adult offspring survive and reproduce. When sons mate, their offspring are cared for by females in another group, whereas when daughters reproduce the offspring stay in the group, which increases local competition for resources within the group.

Theory predicts that in order to have the best chance of spreading their genes, without carrying an additional burden, mothers should focus their efforts on their sons. This research backs up this theory and demonstrates the extent to which older sons are dependent on their mothers for survival.

Lead author on the paper University of Exeter PhD student Emma Foster said: "Killer whales are extraordinary animals and their social groups are really unusual in that mothers and their sons are lifelong companions. Our research suggests that they have developed the longest menopause of any non-human species so that they can offer this level of commitment to their older offspring."

Dr Dan Franks, from the Department of Biology at the University of York, said: "Our analysis shows that male killer whales are pretty much mommy's boys and struggle to survive without their mother's help. The need for mothers to care for their sons into adulthood explains why killer whales have evolved the longest post-reproductive lifespan of any non-human animal."

Dr Darren Croft of the University of Exeter added: "Both humans and killer whales are unusual in having a long menopause. Although they share this trait, the way older females benefit from ceasing reproduction differs, reflecting the different structure of human and killer whale societies. While it is believed that the menopause evolved in humans partly to allow women to focus on providing support for their grandchildren, it seems that female killer whales act as lifelong carers for their own offspring, particularly their adult sons. It is just incredible that these sons stick by their mothers' sides their entire lives."

This research was supported by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Leverhulme Trust and Earthwatch.

Kindle Fire HD 7-inch hands-on (Update: video)

Kindle Fire HD 7inch handson

As expected, the big news at today's gadget-filled Amazon event is the successor to the Kindle Fire, which was launched in New York, roughly this time last year. It's not the Fire 2, however -- this is the Kindle Fire HD. It's clear the minute you grab hold of it that Amazon wanted to start over with this device in a number of ways. There's none of that OEM build quality from the first go-round. This is a nice, slim device that really feels as though it can stand up to some of the nicer Android tablets out there -- we'd certainly put our initial impressions of build up there with the Nexus 7, which just happens to share the same screen size and 1280 x 800 resolution.

The corners of the tablet are more rounded than its predecessor, with a glossy bezel going around the display -- a little bit of the rubberized backing creeps out on top of this. There are no buttons here, however. If you want to effect the screen, give it a tap and you get a small virtual menu on the side. As advertised, the display is quite vivid. Amazon talked up the decrease of glare, though it was a bit hard to tell just how successful the company was, given the fact that we're indoors. The device has a matte rear, with that stereo speaker going down a line in a middle, vents on either side.

Performance-wise, this seemed pretty snappy running off a heavily-skinned version of Android 4.0, and we got the pre-loaded (at least on Amazon's own tablet) Hunger Games movie to load quite quickly, thanks no doubt to all of the investment the company put into the WiFi side of this device. Interestingly, there was a little lag as we were flipping through the pages of a book, with the Fire doing a little loading every few pages or so.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.
